Al-Biruni, an Arab traveler, wrote about the temple in his travelogue, influencing Mahmud Ghaznavi to attack it in 1025. Ghaznavi and his 5,000 companions plundered its wealth and destroyed it. Subsequently, King Bhima of Gujarat and King Bhoj of Malwa rebuilt it. It faced demolition for the fifth time in 1297 when the Delhi Sultanate captured Gujarat.
